• Guardrails – A guardrail provides protection from a fall of an open stairway or walkway.  Guardrails ensure the safety of homeowners, guests and pets. Guardrails can be added to patios, balconies, staircases and other areas where falling may be a potential hazard.

When Are Handrails Required? How Many Steps?

Handrails are required in Minneapolis, MN when there are four or more steps. The Minnesota building code requires that all stairways that have four or more steps to have guardrails or handrails installed.  Rails must be between 34″ – 38″ in height from the top of each tread.  Minnesota code requires that any deck that is 30″ off the ground must have rails that are 36″ high above the primary surface of the deck.  Gaps inside guardrails must be spaced no more than 4″ apart, with no more than a 6″ spherical gap between the bottom rail and each step.  This ensures no small child can fall through the rail or get their head between any spaces in the rail.  This building code is required for all interior and exterior staircases and decks.
