Types of Iron Railing

• Guardrails – A guardrail provides protection from the fall of an open stairway or walkway.  Guardrails ensure the safety of homeowners, guests, and pets. Guardrails can be added to patios, balconies, staircases, and other areas where falling may be a potential hazard.
• Handrails – A handrail serves as a support or grab-able rail at the side of a stairway or platform.  Handrails also enhance the appearance of steps or staircases along with providing security and safety.
• Wall mounts – Wall mounts are typically placed in narrow areas such as hallways or on slight slopes where a guardrail is not necessary.  Wall mounts are used as a grip to assist a person from falling.
• Interior stair rails – An interior stair rail serves the same purpose as a guardrail to prevent injury from falling on open stairways or walkways.  Interior stair rails can drastically improve the appearance of your home and add substantial value as well.

When Are Handrails Required? How Many Steps?

Handrails are required in Minneapolis, MN when there are four or more steps. The Minnesota building code requires that all stairways that have four or more steps to have guardrails or handrails installed.  Rails must be between 34″ – 38″ in height from the top of each tread.  The Minnesota code requires that any deck that is 30″ off the ground have rails that are 36″ high above the primary surface of the deck.  Gaps inside guardrails must be spaced no more than 4″ apart, with no more than a 6″ spherical gap between the bottom rail and each step.  This ensures no small child can fall through the rail or get their head between any spaces in the rail.  This building code is required for all interior and exterior staircases and decks.
